Apple somethings

I made & wrote up this recipe post a few years ago & never posted it. I wanted the recipe today since we went apple picking this morning.  Figured I would just go ahead & post it.  Enjoy making some!

I’m sure I have pictures somewhere… if I find them or we make them & they turn out well today I will post some.   I combined a few different recipes into making this. Among them I recall these….

Ingredients
  1. 2 pie crusts or equivalent recipe of pie crust - divided into 8 chunks
  2. Filling
  3. 6 cups diced apples
  4. Juice of 1/2 lemon (or 1-2tbsp lem
  5. on juice)
  6. 1/2 c sugar
  7. 4 tbsp flour
  8. 1/4 tsp salt
  9. splash vanilla (1-2 tsp?)
  10. heavy dose of cinnamon (1 tbsp?)
  11. Crumb Topping
  12. 1/2 cup flour
  13. 1/2 stick butter (I used 1.5 sticks butter & had a glob not a crumb topping - the recipe was confusing - I am guessing it is really ONE 1/2stick of butter)
  14. 1 cup brown sugar
  15. 1/2 c oats
  16. 1/4 tsp salt
  17. Egg wash
  18. 1 egg - fork whipped
Instructions
  1. Make your pie crust or thaw pre-made crusts & divide into 8 crusts. Set aside to chill.
  2. Preheat oven to 375 (I will try 400 next time but 375 worked - I didn't add an egg wash & wish I had to get a nice brown crust)
  3. Mix peeled, diced apples, lemon juice, sugar, flour, salt, vanilla & cinnamon. Set aside.
  4. Combine cold butter & flour (I used a food processor) and add brown sugar, oats & salt.
  5. Roll out 1 eighth of the pie crust into a loose circle. Mound apple mixture in the center & cover with crumb topping. Pull up the side & pinch together. This is a rustic pie so it doesn't need to be perfect! Continue with remaining 7 pies.
  6. Brush top of the crusts lightly with egg wash.
  7. Bake 25-30 minutes until crust is golden & apples are cooked.

Quilting!

I’ve been busy being a mom and making things lately.  Finding some new hobbies & perfecting the “old” ones.  I just haven’t been blogging.  If you have followed me on instagram you’ve been able to see a lot of my fun stuff!  I am splitting and creating a project-only instagram – so far I’m not using it but please feel free to follow it for when I do!  User name is scrapsbyheather (crazy weird name to go with this blog – I know!)  As of right now I’m not using it yet – I want to hang onto the name and may move more quilting there & keep more personal on hbuchwitz.

Why am I hoping to blog again?  Well in large part because I’m in the process of setting myself up to start offering my quilting services to the public!  I know I have the ability; with Sam a bit older I am starting to have the time; I just need to get my supplies and hardware all set up for a larger production scale!

I’m also planning to write up details on some of my recent adventures.  I’ve taken up knitting (I don’t devote much time to it but I love it).  I put my digital skills to use creating a class cookbook with 1st graders (and some friends; plus we raised $1000 for Andy’s school in the process).   I spearheaded bringing VBS back to our church after 5 years without it & had nearly 200 kids attend (and I maintained my sanity).  I have been quilting, making quilts and quilting those that I made.  I made a whole LOT of cloth baby diapers for Sam who is nearly done with them (serious potty training coming our way soon).  I’ve started designing my own quilt patterns.  Some of these I will make into patterns you can buy.   I’m currently making 20×20 wall hangings with characters from the movie Wall-E for Sam’s room.  I will try to share my experiences and advice on all of these and more in the coming months.

If you are looking for a long arm quilter let me know & I will clue you in to when I will be ramped up & ready to start taking quilts.  If you have a quilt you’d love to be made from scratch – let me know that too.

2015 Scrapbooking/Photographer plans? Anybody?

A post…. hey a post!   No pictures this time though (is that legal)?  Sometimes I think the pictures keep me from posting – even though I love taking pictures – it just adds enough “extra” time that I end up not getting a post written.

So here’s today’s thought.  I put this up on facebook on my page wall & in my chat group (hey come like & join both please!)

What are your plans for 2015? Mine is to actually pull out some paper, maybe finish baby albums. For yearly documenting I am just taking pictures at this point…. trying to be intentional about capturing memories, posting to instagram/flickr/facebook with comments so that someday I have that “journaling” to go by.

I have seen a few scrapbookers who were hard core Project Lifers abandon it this year! I think what’s happening to them is they are designers, scrapbookers who liked the simplicity of PL, but ended up just designing very detailed pocket images/pages! That’s more work than they were doing before! Several are shifting to a monthly layout in various forms. I still like the PL concept for those who can stick to the kits…. I have always had a hard time with that & tend to add alot to mine…. thus never finishing!/

ruck-bu part 2

Ok – This post will be long & picture heavy but I want to get the ruck-bu instructions out in one post.  Imay do a follow-up post with adjustments I would make it creating another.  So far I LOVE it!  I love the wicking inner (which you can do with any mei-tai/SSC style carrier).  I love how EASY it is to get the baby up!  I love the extra support from the wrap straps.   What I don’t love so far – wrap straps are long…. which means they can drag on the ground (similar to a wrap) & I would make my shoulder straps wider & probably add thicker padding if I had a do-over.  Then again it is summer & I am wearing sleeveless shirts – when I have longer sleeves on that may not bother me at all.

You can see my initial post for more info on supplies & inspiration/why here – Ruck-bu  …. no I wasn’t sneezing I meant ruck-bu!

Ruck-bu …. no I wasn’t sneezing I meant ruck-bu!

This is a new creation of mine!   I used a few sites for ideas/insrpiration.  They includeCherry Berry Baby and Barefoot and Pregnant, Esquire.

Being on kid #2 and being smarter but also on the go more I have found myself interested in carrying Sam around instead of using a stroller everywhere (because there are places where strollers just don’t go or don’t go easily).  I started out with an Ergo and a loaner ring sling (thank you Monika!).  I liked both at first.

The Ergo started to both my back once Sam hit about 15# though & the ring sling was a loaner and unless you are VERY capable with it, you shouldn’t really back carry.

So I got into baby wrapping.  The beauty of a wrap is that they are super flexible.  The downside is they aren’t very intuitive – just a large length of woven fabric really.   Alot of moms have probably tried out a Moby wrap – very similar but longer & stretchier than a woven.  Woven wraps can carry kids… not just babies – KIDS!  I got two different lengths for Mother’s Day & found I liked each for different things… but my longer “rainbow” wrap had a hem flaw.  The manufacturer (Little Frog in Poland) was AWESOME and replaced it leaving me with the “flawed” wrap.  So I set out to make a DIY creation with it.

Christmas in July – Christmas Stockings

This was written in January… but I saved it up to post now.  I am not going to update the “what I am doing” section – it’s a look back to January!

I’ve been pretty busy with a newborn, 5 year old & Christmas prep going on.  I made very intricate cross-stitch stockings for Kevin & myself over the years (started mine in college & his while we were dating).  I started one for Andy when I was pregnant with him – 5+ years ago… it still isn’t done!  So I figure at this rate Sam will never get one!  Time to make a new plan!  I saw this pattern (Merry) by Camille Roskelley when she made them for herself & in her instagram posts during the holidays.  Here’s a peak into my finished products.IMG_5484 - 2013-12-10 at 22-04-20

Supergirl – and proud

Once upon a time I was the tiny skinny kid and was embarrassed to be so skinny. I got older and played sports but was embarrassed to not be as fast or strong as the other girls. In college I got some curves and then some more ‘curves’ when I started working full time and was embarrassed to not be thinner.  Honestly – it’s a lose-lose for most of us girls.

Disney album next steps

Worked on the Disney album a bit more this week!  I took all of my printed photos (that I organized here) and  sorted them into their proper organization & started populating my album with “stuff”.   I had some help taking photos for you…. I cannot wait to finish this album for him!   His interest in everything we did a year ago is awesome and I want to finish it for him so he can hang onto all of his wonderful memories (that we all know are so fleeting at his age).   He of course still had jammies & bedhead when I was taking the pictures – but that’s real life on a weekend!

To cloth or not… that is the question

A bit about me – I am a believer in eating clean, whole foods etc. (doesn’t mean I do it), but I am not a hard core crunchy mama.   I don’t do organic, I use regular detergent & (until recently-that’s another story) cleaning products, I didn’t know what an amber necklace was until a week ago & I doubt I would know one if I saw one!

For you crunchy mamas out there – good for you!   I just don’t have the energy because it’s not my thing that I am passionate about (how would I find time to scrapbook or quilt).

Disney Album Organization

Well, it has been a while – and I am sorry!   I made quite a few things lately – but I may not blog about them yet.  I even have a blog post about the Christmas Stockings I made for us this year all written up – I will try to post it closer to when people will be thinking about Christmas projects again!

It has been a year (seriously – how is that possible!) since we went to Disney.   I sooo would love to go back – but it wouldn’t be the same – we have our Disney “wish” (aka Sam), Andy is older etc.  I have run across pictures of Andy at Disney a few times lately & I am astonished how much he’s grown up since last year!   Yes – he’s bigger physically – but he just looks so much more grown up & he’s becoming a boy and less a pre-schooler.  I am so glad we went when we did – he hadn’t hit the big whiney stage quite as intensely yet but MOST importantly – he LOVED Mickey with all of his heart & soul!  He still likes Mickey & Jake & the other Disney shows, but Star Wars, The Hobbit, superheroes &  Wild Kratts (especially those guys) have crept up in importance.
